The ask
In November 2024, Drummond Central and Re:Production brought us a dream brief: re-recording "Somebody to Love" by Queen.
Songs like this come with a legacy. "Somebody to Love" is known for its stacked gospel harmonies and the richness of the recording. We had to reach the same standard of vocal production.
"It's the record on which they really pushed the boat out, recording themselves around 100 times to get that thick, gospel choir texture."
The Dreams Choir
In 1976, Freddie Mercury, Brian May and Roger Taylor sang their parts over and over until three voices sounded like a hundred-strong gospel choir. We did it the same way with four. Every singer took every part in their range, and Felix Hagan covered every harmony in the arrangement, top to bottom. Around a hundred voices, stacked by hand at Nevo Sound.
This is the looping middle eight, split into its four choir parts. It starts with the bass. Press play on each voice to build the stack, and stop any voice to hear the others without it.
On air since Easter 2025.
Renewed into 2027.
